Reggae Boy Michail Antonio was refused entry to England while returning from Ghana after he lost his British passport and tried using his Jamaican passport.

The 34-year-old Antonio who was born in Wandsworth, south London, visited his academy in Ghana, and planned to return to London before joining the Jamaican team for their trip to St Louis to take on the United States of America on November 18. But Antonio issues started before he reached Ghana as he had lost his British passport and had to use his Jamaican document to enter the African country.

Speaking on Gary Lineker’s podcast “The Rest is Football”, Antonio said in this day and age of information it shouldn’t be too difficult to travel.

“In 2024, with the times we are in with AI and everything, you’re telling me I can’t leave the UK where I was born, I’ve never left, and fly to Ghana using my Jamaica passport, and I can’t come back to England without a visa?” asked Antonio.

“I lost my passport before I left, but I thought I’m English, so it’s not gonna be a problem with me getting back in the UK,” he said.

“So, I was like, I’m just gonna fly my Jamaican passport onto Ghana to check out my soccer school, my academy that I have over there. I go up there for three days, do all the media work and everything I need to be done. I go to the airport. Obviously, I’m flying back to UK to fly to Jamaica. I guess the airport, they’re like, where’s your visa?” said Antonio. “I’m like, what are you talking about? They’re like, where’s your visa? I was like, a visa for what? You need a visa to get back to UK?”

Antonio pointed out that he has been living in the UK for his whole life and never needed visa and that he was stuck in Ghana.

“I got an emergency passport just to get back to the UK, then wasn’t able to sort out a visa to fly to America because I couldn’t get a visa with on my Jamaica passport. So that’s how I missed the second game,” he added.

Antonio missed both Jamaica’s games against the USA in which Jamaica lost 0-1 and 2-4 and crashed out of the CONCACAF Nations League.

Antonio was contacted by the Jamaica Football Federation in 2016 to represent the country but it took five years before he finally made his debut for Jamaica in August 2021 in a World Cup qualifier against Panama losing 0-3.

The powerful striker has scored five goals for Jamaica from 21 games.
