Prime Minister of Grenada Dickon Mitchell has emphasised the vital importance of regional solidarity during times of crisis, citing the October 28 passage of Hurricane Melissa, which severely impacted Jamaica.
In expressing solidarity with the Government and people of Jamaica as the island recovers from the recent hurricane‑related challenge, Prime Minister Mitchell noted that support extended by regional territories, particularly Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Member States, was pivotal in facilitating Grenada’s own recovery from its most recent hurricane impact.
“We experienced a hurricane in July of last year. [So] we understand the challenges that you are going through because we have gone through it. The solidarity of our brothers and sisters in the region helped us to rebound,” he stated.
Prime Minister Mitchell was among several CARICOM Heads of Government and officials who travelled to Jamaica in a demonstration of support, visiting communities affected by Hurricane Melissa on Monday, November 17.
The tour was led by Prime Minister, and CARICOM Chairman, Dr Andrew Holness.
Speaking during a stop at the Whitehouse Police Station in Westmoreland, Prime Minister Mitchell underscored the significance of the CARICOM delegation’s visit, affirming, “We wanted to show, first-hand, our solidarity [and] our camaraderie with the Government and people of Jamaica.”
He also commended the country’s law-enforcement officers for their steadfast efforts in maintaining order during the period of recovery.
“I think it is important to commend the lawmen of Jamaica for the fabulous work that they have done. Despite the challenges that the population is going through, peace and good order prevails,” he pointed out.
Prime Minister Mitchell also commended the resilience and good spirit of the Jamaican people, noting their strength in the face of adversity.
“We know it is going to be a long recovery but I think the Caribbean people have shown, time and time again, their resilience when it comes to climatic conditions. So I think we can certainly say to the Jamaican people, to the Prime Minister and the Government that we are with you in this… we certainly will be with you every step of the way,” he stated.
Other members of the visiting delegation included Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley; President of Guyana, Dr Irfaan Ali; Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne; and CARICOM Secretary‑General, Dr Carla Barnett. They were accompanied by several members of the Government of Jamaica.
