Jamaica’s gymnast Danusia Francis finished last in the women’s uneven bars event at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Sunday as the torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) that she suffered before the start of the competition, affected her performance.

Francis’ routine lasted less than 10 seconds as she ensured that she is forever etched in the annals of the Olympic Games, by participating.

Francis, with a heavily bandaged left knee, performed two simple toe-ons on the uneven bars and dismounted on the right foot.

The judges scored Francis a very low 0.5 for the degree of difficulty and 9.033 for execution, deducting 6.5 points in various penalties as she got an overall score of 3.033.

Francis, who was born in England, was originally scheduled to participate in the four-event women’s all-round competition but had to change plans after suffering the torn ACL and decided to contest only the uneven bars, skipping the vault, balance beam and floor exercises.

The 27-year-old Francis was a reserve for her birth nation at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

She qualified as a Jamaican through her paternal heritage.
