Today we say happy birthday to Rising Star winner Christopher Martin! And on this, his 35th birthday, Our Today wants to recommend to you eight Christopher Martin songs to jam to.

Here are a few a songs in which the singer, born on Valentine’s Day, proclaims LOVE one way or the other.

8. Mi Fren Dem – a LOVE song to your friends

In this 2012 song from the Corner Shop Riddim, Martin sings highly of real friends, and shares how much he appreciates the fact that they aren’t around him for his money.

Martin also highlights some other important points that aid in keeping a friendship together.

7. Paper Loving – a LOVE song to the real one

Paper Loving, a relatable song for the rich and famous, talks about ‘fake love’ brought on by money. Martin, who appears to be in an entanglement with a woman already in a relationship, claims that he treats her better than her lover, however, it appears she isn’t able to choose between them.

Martin treats her well, but the other man has money. In the track, he tells her to love him for who he is and not for his money, or lack there of. He goes on to sing that if she isn’t able to love him during his ‘broke’ stage, then she shouldn’t return once he comes into wealth.

“And if you can’t love me now, don’t love me later
When my later is much greater
It only proves that she love di paper, my paper
If you can’t love me now, don’t love me later
When my later is much greater
Cah mi nuh waan no impersonator for my paper”

6. Cheaters Prayer – a LOVE song from a flawed partner

This is definitely not a track one would want to hear on Valentine’s Day and cheating is an unfortunate but sure reality,

Released in 2017 from the singer’s Big Deal album, in Cheater’s Prayer, the songwriter comically begs God not to tempt him to cheat on his girlfriend and, if he does end up cheating on her, he asks God to prevent him from being caught.

The single perhaps got as much attention as it did due to the unexpected idea and theme in the song.

5. Mama – a LOVE song to your mother

Released on the 2012 on the Perfects Key Riddim, Mama is a track dedicated to mothers and all their efforts.

Martin, in the initial part of the track, Martin makes the song quite personal, saying that without his mother he wouldn’t be anywhere in life, and because of that he wouldn’t dare put anything above her.

In the chorus, he went on to to generalise the lyrics, encouraging those listening to appreciate their mother and sing along to the track for her.

4. Under the Influence – a LOVE song to your sneaky link

Released from the Big Deal album, 2015’s Under The Influence is one the singer’s most bold and sexual tracks. Martin proclaims to his lover that they will both get high on an unnamed substance and make love while intoxicated.

On the track, Martin tries to get a feel of the experiences his interest has had in the past, asking her several questions about places she has had sex. He vows to take her on a sexual journey and give her quite the experience as they make love intoxicated.

3. Chill Spot – a LOVE song to your place of relaxation

In this 2013 record, Martin talks about his appreciation for places (corner shop) that he is able to visit for just a few hours to destress and enjoy himself.

Amid all the unending problems people tend to face, Martin sings that we all have that one spot we are able to go to escape our unfortunate realities.

2. Take My Wings – a LOVE song to your lover

In this song he seems deep in love, and declares his feelings for his significant other. Martin pleads to his lover to accept all this love he has for her.

One of many artistes to sing on the Guardian Angel rhythm, Martin’s Take My Wings – released in 2007, two years after his Rising Star win – did quite well and received a significant airplay.

1. I’m A Big Deal – a LOVE song to yourself

One of the singer’s most popular song’s I’m A Big Deal speaks about self love, self care and self encouragement. On the track, we can hear him speaking words on positivity over both him and his friends.

The singer also says everyone is equal and no matter the skin colour or the type of car you drive, you are not more important than the next man. The track was also used as the theme song for one of Jamaica’s KFC campaigns.
