Today (February 7) is the 49th anniversary of Grenada’s independence from British rule in 1974.

The country is made up of three main islands: Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique, as well as several smaller ones.

In the national flag, the red symbolises the bravery of the island’s forefathers and the warmth of the people, while the yellow represents the abundant spice production, including nutmeg and cinnamon. The green symbolises the lush vegetation, while the star represents the country’s hope for unity and progress.

Grenada is known as the “Island of Spice” for its rich history of producing spices, particularly nutmeg or as the “Jab Jab nation” for its style of carnival celebrations.

Grenada is the birthplace of calypso artist, the Mighty Sparrow, who is known for his socially conscious and humorous songs that helped to popularise calypso music internationally.

The island continues to make its mark on the music industry with their highly energised style of soca from artistes such as the ‘energy god of soca’ Mr Killa, Lavaman, Donnell, Lil Natty and Thunda, and Terra D Governor.
