Naomi Campbell.

Almost two weeks after celebrity supermodel Naomi Campbell announced that she is now a mother at age 50,
speculation around her pregnancy has continued to run wild.

Campbell, who took to social media to share the good news, posted a picture to her Instagram on
Tuesday (May 18) showing the feet of her newborn with the caption, “A beautiful little blessing has
chosen me to be her mother…”.

Though she did not make it immediately clear the means by which her motherhood journey came to
be, the possibility of natural birth at age 50, though rare, is not impossible.

Given the increased possibilities of child bearing that modern technology has allowed, below are Our
Today
’s educated guesses on how Naomi Campbell became a mother at age 50.

1. SURROGACY

Bearing in mind Campbell’s age and the risks that come with pregnancy for women older in age, her child
could have been born by surrogacy.

This would mean that the baby, who legally is Naomi’s child, may have been carried by another woman
through in vitro fertilisation (IVF).

This method would have required Naomi to take medication to improve her egg development, then, once
the eggs are mature, they would be extracted and fertilised in a culture dish with cleansed semen.
After a few days, the fertilised egg would be inserted directly into the uterus of the surrogate.
However, according to Dr David Keefe, a gynecologist and fertility researcher at New York University,
“around age 50, many women are entering menopause, after which egg harvesting isn’t possible”.
As a result, a more viable option would have been straight surrogacy, where the surrogate is impregnated
directly and the child is genetically related to the surrogate mother.

2. ADOPTION

In the event a woman is unable to give birth naturally and would prefer to avoid the expenses associated
with surrogacy, adoption is a good option. In fact, in May 2019, fans thought Naomi had adopted a child
after sharing a picture on Mother’s Day of her holding a newborn baby.

3. QUINQUAGENARIAN PREGNANCY

A final possibility of how Naomi became a mother at 50, is naturally after having what is known as a
quinquagenarian pregnancy.

A quinquagenarian pregnancy is the name given to pregnancy that occurs at 50-59 years.

Though risky, it is possible to have a successful pregnancy at this age. Singer
Janet Jackson, who gave birth weeks before her 50th birthday, proved just how possible it is.

That said, 50 or not, Campbell is a first-time mom and deserving to be seen as such, despite whatever method
through which her child came into being.
