Almost four years after his tragic death, United States rapper XXXTentacion has made a significant achievement that only leaves the world wondering what could have been.

According to music news online platform Chart Data, the Sad rapper, born Jahseh Onfroy in Plantation, South Florida to Jamaican parents, has now seen his second full-length album, 2018’s ?, surpass Drake’s 2018 project Scorpion to become the most streamed hip-hop album in Spotify history.

As of last November, Scorpion was ahead of ? by nearly one billion streams.

XXXTentacion’s sophomore studio album has since reached 7.884 billion plays on the platform, with Drake currently sitting at 7.883 billion.

Released in March 2018, ? gave XXXTentacion his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 albums chart, earning 131,000 total units, 106,000 of which were streaming equivalent units. The LP was highlighted by Sad, the late rapper’s first and only #1 single.

The 20-year-old, considered an artiste on the rise, saw that success tragically interrupted when, three months after topping the Billboard Hot 100 and 200 albums charts, he was fatally shot while leaving a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, Florida.

XXXTentacion, who had a long standing beef with Drake and had openly criticised the Canadian rapper for appropriating Jamaican culture, had himself spent time in the company of Jamaican music producers since his early teens and collaborated with reggae/dancehall acts, including Sizzla and Vybz Kartel.

Back in 2017, XXXTentacion had blasted Drake on social media, saying: “Tell this p$%sy n$#ga Drake stop speaking patois. You are not Jamaican. I’m a real f*^$king Jamaican.”

He added: “I’m from f*$king Kington, all of my family is from Kingston. Stop stealing my people’s culture. We don’t claim you, stop! We don’t want you. Go back to where you came from.”

The post has since been deleted and, since then, Drake has soldified his status as a favourite rapper in Jamaica, particular through his friendship with Popcaan, who he signed to his OVO label.

In the meantime, XXXTentacion will be the subject of a documentary, Look at Me Now, set to premiere at SXSW Film Festival 2022.
