Over the last two months, parliamentary discourse in Gordon House has become particularly rowdy and unsavoury.
Both the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the Opposition, People’s National Party (PNP) have been lobbing barbs at each other, much to the consternation of the general public.
The Opposition has accused the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Juliet Holness, of being partisan and heavy-handed, while the Speaker says members of the Opposition have not been compliant with the Standing Orders, are recording proceedings in the House on their devices, and some attend sittings dressed inappropriately.
The debate surrounding NARRA and revelations about Minister Dr Andrew Wheatley’s statutory declarations, not to mention the Government’s deal with U.S. authorities surrounding Third Country Nationals (TCN) have been particularly fractious, with frayed tempers leading to sharp words on both sides.
The Jamaica Labour Party has issued a statement which reads in full: “ Jamaica Labour Party calls out PNP lies uttered in a bid to distract from their disgraceful parliamentary behaviour.
“The governing JLP rejects the PNP’s move to utter a series of barefaced and unadulterated lies in a bid to distract from the public backlash it is receiving from its consistently disruptive and outrageous conduct in Parliament.
“The latest lie and weak attempt to spin the narrative were uttered in a media release issued by the PNP on Thursday, July 2, 2026. In the interest of Jamaica, the PNP should commit to conducting itself in a more appropriate manner.”
