KC, Excelsior girls on course to retain Corporate Area Champs with sizeable leads

Defending champions Kingston College and Excelsior Girls are well on their ways to retain their Corporate Area Athletics Championships after established leads heading to the final day at the Ashenheim Stadium.

Kingston College (KC) have rattled up 143 points and hold  a 29-points advantage over Calabar High on 114 points. Jamaica College (JC) are third on 105 points while some distance back are Wolmer’s Boys in fourth spot with 35 points and Excelsior Boy completed the top five on 29 points.

Excelsior Girls with 155 hold a 33.5 points lead over second placed Wolmer’s Girls on 121.5 with Immaculate Conception sitting in third spot on 120 points. Convent of Mercy Alpha are fourth on 119 with St Andrew High competing the top five on 51.5 points.

The two-day event concludes on Saturday and based on the indicators, KC and Excelsior look set to retain their crowns.

In the first boys’ final, KC’s Shamir Kelly surprised many by capturing the Class One long jump by soaring to 7.48m (2.6 m/s). but with that jump wind aided, Kelly’s fourth jump of 7.38m will be his massive personal best. Calabar’s Romaine Lewis was second with 7.38m. JC’s J’Aivar Cato finished third with 7.23m.

In the Class Two long jump, KC’s Amani Phillips smashed the record of 7.05m taking it to 7.30 (1.3m/s). Michael Graham of Excelsior was second with 6.98 with KC’s Omarion Miller third with 6.88m.

Shamar Shaw of Calabar also broke the Class Three long jump record with 6.45m (-0.3) to win ahead of Zackari Brown of Wolmer’s Boys with 5.94m. KC’s Nahjheir Francis leapt a persona best of 5.93m for third.

Earlier, at the end of the 1500m, KC picked up 37 points winning the Class Three and Two courtesy of Julius Itubo of Kenya who raced alone and stopped the clock at 4:12.71, well below the previous record of 4:18.93. Wolmer’s Boys Alfaro Cunningham was a distance second in 4:30.56.

Kenya’s Peter Njuguna of KC dismantled the field in winning the Class Two 1500m in an impressive 3:57.43 ahead of Ghana’s Evan Tetteh of JC with 4:09.28. Njuguna’s countryman and teammate Victor Kagika was third with 4:12.32.

In Class One, Calabar picked up 16 points as Odane Davidson won in 4:07.69 ahead of his teammate Justin ebb with 4:08.40 as he held off KC’s Stephen Muturi of Kenya who rallied late for third in 4:08.66.

In the girls’ sections, Excelsior quickly took control with a quinella in the Class One long jump final courtesy of Kimeka Smith who erased the record of 5.70m with 5.74m. Her teammate Shelly-Ann Taylor was second with 5.49m.

In the Class Four high jump, Sanique Watt of Immaculate Conception took the honours with a record leap of 1.60m ahead of Shaniel Whyte of Wolmer’s Girls with 1.50m.

Zoeyann Plummer of Excelsior took the Class Three discus with a throw of 37.00m while Abigail Bennett of Merl Grove High won the Class Two with 44.10m.

In Class Four, Phillipia James and Shiah Moore of the Convent of Mercy Alpha captured the top two spots clocking 12.47 and 12.68 respectively. Gabrielle Williamson of St Andrew High was third in 12.75.

Kemanic Edwards of KC won the boys’ Class Four after a poor start but powered his way to a personal best of 11.38 and had the Wolmer’s pair of Ajani Lumley and Joshua McWilliams second and third with 11.48 and 11.51 respectively.

Convent of Mercy Alpha’s Seana Wilson continued their good sprinting form capturing the Girls’ Class Three 100m in 12.07 ahead of Kayla Johnson in 12.18. Alpha’s Allyah Ross notched third with 12.30.

In the Boys’ Class Three JC’s high stepping Kai Kelly won in 11.08 ahead of KC’s Andre Genus in 11.29. Amarii Walker of St George’s College was third in 11.30.

Wolmer’s Natrece East broke the Girls’ Class Two record stopping the clock at 11.78 ahead of her teammate Tiana Marshall in 12.04 with Kyra Kelly of Immaculate Conception finishing third in 12.28.

JC’s Kaeden Herbert of Trinidad and Tobago won a close Class Two 100m final clocking 10.81 and just edged the Calabar’s pair of Ronaldo Francis and Ched Brown in 10.81 and 10.82 respectively. KC’s Jonathan Clarke finished fourth in 10.89.

Abigail Wolfe ran  season’s best 11.75 to win the Girls’ Class One 100m ahead of Tashay Faulkner of Alpha in 12.07. Shakira Rhoden of Excelsior was third with 12.18.

The improving Tyrece Foreman of St George’s College won the Boys’ Class One event in 10.44 ahead of Malike Nugent of Excelsior in 10.56 with KC’s Nyron Wade third in 10.60.
