KC’s thrower struck first Penn Relay gold on a wonderful opening day for Jamaican schools

Kingston College’s Despiro Wray won the first gold for a Jamaican at the 129th staging of the Penn Relays in Philadelphia on Thursday morning.

Wray, fresh from his gold medal at the Carifta Games, threw an impressive personal best of 20.87m with a 5.45 kg shot put.

Wray, who also claimed the Class One title at Champs, won ahead of fellow Jamaicans Devontae Edwards of Munro College with 19.78m and Cornwall College’s Marlando Farquharson with 19.67m.

Following Wray’s early exploits, Jamaica College’s Chevez Penn, Michael-Andre Edwards, Rickoy Hunter of STETHS and Addison James of Edwin Allen all won field events in the morning session.

Penn won the high jump with a leap of 2.09m ahead of Vance Harris of Archbishop John Carroll with 2.06m. KC’s Aaron McKenzie was sixth with 2.03m.

Hunter captured the long jump with 7.30m ahead of Calabar’s Romaine Lewis with 7.22m, while Edwards took the triple jump with 15.95m. Nicardo Clarke of Wolmer’s Boys was in third with 14.82m.

Addison James of Edwin Allen won the javelin throw with 65.98m ahead of Ojay Ellis of Munro College, 59.14. National Junior Record holder Tarique Daley of Calabar High was fourth with 58.67m.

Meanwhile, Jamaica College’s Joseph Salmon grabbed second spot in the high school discus with 61.64m and Calabar High’s Kamari Kennedy fifth with 59.32m. Christian Brothers High’s Ashton Hearn won with 64.30m.
