Minister of Labour and Social Security Pearnel Charles Jr is set to meet today with representatives from the Union of Clerical, Administrative, and Supervisory Employees (UCASE), the union representing members of Petrojam Technical Services, following strike action on Wednesday, October 12.

More than 217 workers reportedly staged a ‘sick out’ yesterday to express their frustration with the current compensation process.

The labour minister, in a statement on Wednesday, appealed to the workers to reconvene and continue their duties pending the scheduled meeting with UCASE, which was scheduled for 8 a.m. today.

Charles said that once normal operations are restored, a dedicated session for negotiations will be set for 2 p.m. today.

The labour ministry also sought to reassure that its mission is to foster positive workplace relationships, ensuring the concerns and well-being of the Jamaican workforce remain at the forefront of its initiatives.

Reading Time: 2 minutesThe United States is stepping up its push for deeper energy and infrastructure partnerships in the Caribbean, with a focus on Suriname’s emerging oil and gas sector and the region’s long-term energy security, according to Paul Watzlavick, Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Paramaribo.

“It’s increasingly clear that this region is an essential partner to the US,” Watzlavick said. “We want partnerships that support a strong workforce, keep our people safe and respect the sovereignty of every country.” He stressed that energy security in the Caribbean goes beyond production, highlighting the need for modern infrastructure, updated technologies and stronger systems across power generation and transmission. We need energy systems that are up to date. The needs here are very different from Trinidad or Texas, but the goal is the same,” Watzlavick said.
