Inconsistent Manchester United have sacked manager Ruben Amorim after 14 months in charge and placed Under-18 coach and former player Darren Fletcher as interim manager.

Ruben Amorim was appointed Manchester United manager in November 2024, but things have not gone according to plan as they finished 15th last year with 42 points, their worst performance in 48 years when they were relegated in the 1973-74 season.

Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag, has won 15 of his 47 Premier League games, losing 19 and drawing 13. Currently, Manchester United are sixth in the English Premier League on 31 points from 20 games. He had the lowest win rate of any Manchester United manager in history with 31 per cent.

The 40-year-old Portuguese manager is said to have fallen out with the club’s top brass, and he made his feelings known in a press conference last week, stating that he was brought to Manchester United as a manager, and not as the head coach—a clear dig at the management style of the club. He also suggested he would not be fully backed in the transfer market.

Then came a reported meeting with Director of Football Jason Wilcox on Friday, which was said to have gone badly after discussing tactics and style of play.

Amorim’s position was considered untenable following that meeting, and he was promptly sacked with 18 months remaining on his contract.

Former midfielder Darren Fletcher will take charge for Wednesday’s Premier League game against Burnley, and will remain in place until a caretaker is appointed for the rest of the campaign, with the club planning to name a permanent successor in the summer.
