Kylian Mbappe is set to pocket €60 million (£52.5m) after winning a legal battle with his former club Paris Saint-Germain over unpaid salary and bonuses.
Part of the ruling also requires PSG to pay him €1.5 million (£1.3m) in so called “ethics bonus” payments.
While the idea of an ethics bonus might seem unusual to UK football fans, it’s a standard feature in French contracts for professional athletes. Mbappe’s bonus was valued at €500,000 (£438,000) per month, while Neymar’s previously reported deal included €541,680 (£475,876) a month.
These bonuses often include clauses encouraging players to be courteous and available to fans, such as greeting supporters before and after games; however, the reality behind the payments is less about fan interaction and more about a contractual perk.
