It was a much more relaxed Steve McClaren that faced the media after his Reggae Boyz defeated Bermuda 4-0 in their CONCACAF World Cup Qualifier in Kingston on Tuesday night.
Jamaica have regained top spot in Group B from which only the first-placed team will qualify directly to the FIFA World Cup.
As it stands, Jamaica’s destiny is in their own hands after rebounding from the deflating 0-2 loss to Curacao last week.
“I think the key thing was the players knew, the result against Curacao was disappointing, and they wanted the reaction,” McClaren pointed out. “You could see that in training, the two days we had, the focus, and you could see that in the performance.”
Reacted they did, as Jamaica bossed the game in one of the Reggae Boyz’ best performances in years.

An own goal by Dante Leverock in the 24th minute opened the floodgates as Bobby De Cordova-Reid doubled the advantage in the 26th minute. Shamar Nicholson made it 3-0 in the 35th minute before substitute Dujuan ‘Whisper’ Richards scored a brilliant solo goal in the 76th minute.
Jamaica now lead Group B with nine points from four games, ahead of Curacao on eight points. Trinidad and Tobago are in third spot with five points, and Bermuda is at the bottom without a point.
The Reggae Boyz have two games remaining: away to Trinidad and Tobago on November 13, followed by a home game against Curacao on November 18.
“So, we’ve got two very intriguing games, but there’s still a long way to go, a lot to do,” McClaren pointed out. “We just hope the players stay healthy, can play minutes for the club, get fitter and maybe we can get players back that will improve us even more. But we’re pleased with the reaction. We’re pleased with the performance. Changed a few things, brought in energy, and the players responded.”
