At 39, Lionel Messi is still the name driving Argentina’s attack, and after scoring all five of their goals in the tournament so far, the questions about his future have returned just as quickly as the goals.

After recently insisting he would not be at the 2030 World Cup, the Argentina captain sounded less certain this time when asked again. With the tournament set to be hosted across Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with matches also opening in Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina, Messi left the door ajar with a simple “we’ll see what happens” not a yes, but far from a no.

It’s a familiar theme. Since lifting the 2022 World Cup, Messi has often spoken about his physical limits and the uncertainty of how long he would continue, even before going on to add the Copa America title and extend his list of records, including becoming the World Cup’s all time leading scorer.

Back home, his legacy continues to grow. An 85 foot statue now stands in Cutral Co in Patagonia.

On the field, Argentina is already into the knockout rounds thanks to his goals, and they face Jordan in Dallas on Sunday as they look to finish top of Group J.
