
Statistics from the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) indicate that the number of murders recorded since the start of 2024 has jumped to 46 as of January 20, with 13 murders recorded in a one-week period.
The 13 murders were recorded between January 14 and January 20.
According to the data, the numbers represent a 19.3 per cent decline in murders compared to the similar timeframe last year, with 11 fewer murders taking place.
The St James Police Division continues to lead the tally with 11 murders, the most recorded among all police divisions this year. The St Ann and St Catherine North divisions follow with six each.

The Kingston Western and the St Thomas police divisions are the only ones that have not recorded a murder since the start of the year.
A total of 55 shootings have occurred since the start of the year, nine more than in a similar period last year.
Additionally, cases of rape declined by 24, robberies by 1, and break-ins by 4.
Overall, 192 serious crimes were reported, 31 fewer than the 223 recorded in the same period last year.
