The long and successful run of Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh has come to a close.

The Super Bowl-winning coach has informed the Steelers that he is stepping down as head coach, bringing nearly two decades on the sidelines to an end.

Team President Art Rooney II confirmed that Tomlin shared his decision during a meeting on Tuesday, just one day after the Steelers’ playoff run ended with a lopsided 30–6 loss to the Houston Texans in the AFC Wild Card game.

Tomlin leaves behind an impressive legacy in Pittsburgh. He guided the franchise to 193 regular-season wins and captured a Super Bowl title, placing him ninth on the NFL’s all-time wins list and level with Steelers great Chuck Noll.

While postseason success proved harder to come by in recent years, with the team’s last playoff win dating back to 2017 against Kansas City, his overall record kept him among the league’s most respected coaches.

The timing of the move surprised many, especially since Tomlin signed a three-year contract extension in June 2024 that would have kept him in Pittsburgh through the 2027 season. Still, the decision was his own, not the result of pressure from the organisation.

Following Monday night’s loss, quarterback Aaron Rodgers publicly defended Tomlin, pushing back against any talk of him being forced out after another playoff defeat.

Instead, Tomlin chose to step away on his own terms, creating the ninth head coaching opening across the NFL and officially closing one of the longest tenures in the league.
