The National Housing Trust, NHT, is accepting applications for its Smart Energy Grant for public sector pensioners from Tuesday, October 1, 2024, to Friday, October 4.

The Smart Energy Grant, which forms part of a series of policy changes implemented by the NHT on July 1, will see public sector pensioners being able to access up to $1.5 million to enhance their homes with a solar panel system. The Grant will benefit 30 pensioners per parish each year, providing a total of 420 grants per year for the next three years.

Beneficiaries will be selected following a needs-based assessment using the following criteria:

  • At the point of retirement, the pensioner was earning less than $30,000.99 per week;
  • Must be 60 years or older;
  • Must be a homeowner, including those with properties not constructed or mortgaged by the NHT. If the applicant is not a homeowner, they must demonstrate permanent residency at the property;
  • Must not have already installed these systems.

How to apply

Pensioners may apply by accessing the application form on the NHT’s website at, www.nht.gov.jm. They must be able to provide their TRN and NIS numbers as well as their employment history during the application process. Where an applicant is unable to complete the application form themselves, a representative can complete the form on their behalf.

Vaz stated that although the opposition has sought to turn the bus system into a political football, he noted that the bus system is not a matter to be politicised because it benefits all rural parents and students regardless of colour, creed or political affiliation.
