Jamaica’s Brittany Anderson won semi-final two and Megan Tapper finished second in semi-finals three to move into the final of the women’s 100 metres hurdles at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Sunday (August 1).
Yanique Thompson, however, failed to advance as she crashed out in semi-final one.
Anderson, after four false starts, got out the blocks quickly along with world record holder Kendra Harrison of the United States of America (USA). Both battled for the lead until Harrison gained a slight advantage midway, but a determined Anderson pegged her back to claim victory.
Anderson was timed in a personal best of 12.40 seconds with Harrison doing 12.51 to advance from the heat as the two automatic qualifiers for the final. Liz Clay of Australia was third in a personal best of 12.71.
Tapper had to good start, but after seeming to be in danger of being out of an automatic spot, recovered well towards the end to make the final.
Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico won the event in an Olympic record of 12.26 seconds as Tapper did 12.62s and Nadine Visser of the Netherlands a season-best of 12.63s for third.
Thompson had a poor start and tried to make up ground quickly, but clipped the fourth hurdle. Not fully regaining her balance, she clipped the fifth hurdle and had to stop at the sixth hurdle.
