Oblique Seville ran a personal best to join compatriot Yohan Blake to advance to the semi-finals of the men’s 100 metres at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Saturday.
Jamaica’s third representative in the event, Tyquendo Tracey did not report for the starter’s gun as the heats produced fairly ordinary times, with most of the competitors working harder than expected to qualify for the next stage.
Seville, in Heat Three, started a fair distance back but had a good second half of his race to finish in a personal best of 10.04 seconds, behind Italy’s Marcell Jacobs, who ran a national record of 9.94 as Shaun Maswanganyi of South Africa got the third automatic qualifying spot with 10.12.
Blake, in Heat Seven, had to work hard from the middle of the race as, although getting a good start and having the lead early, he got passed before completing his start phase. He then had to battle to keep himself in the automatic qualifying top three spots.
Australia’s Rohan Browning won the event in a personal best of 10.01 seconds with Blake finishing in 10.06 for seconds as Chijindu Ujah of Great Britain was third in 10.08.
