Senegal midfielder says he is taking a break from international football while the current coaching staff remains in charge.

The 27 year old made the announcement after Senegal’s dramatic World Cup exit, where they surrendered a 2-0 lead before losing 3-2 to Belgium after extra time. Belgium sealed victory with a controversial penalty in the 125th minute.

Gueye, who started the match before being substituted in the second half, has earned 45 caps for Senegal and scored twice during the group stage.

Coach Pape Thiaw has faced growing scrutiny since taking charge in December 2024. He was also involved in the controversy surrounding Senegal’s loss of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title after the team’s walk off in the final. Senegal has appealed that decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport as it continues its bid to have the title restored.
