Reigning Olympic champion Hansel Parchment edged out Jamaican compatriot Omar McLeod to take the men’s 110-metre hurdles event at the Wanda Diamond League meet in Birmingham, England on Saturday (May 21).
Parchment clocked a world-leading 13.07-second to win ahead of McLeod, who timed a season’s best of 13.17s. By a mere thousandth of a second, Spaniard Asier Martínez was awarded third place before Pole Damian Czykier despite both stopping the clock at 13.32s.
The 1-2 Jamaican finish in the sprint hurdles is the only highlight so far for the island nation’s athletes, as Yohan Blake and Shericka Jackson both lost their 100m races to Aaron Brown and Dina Asher-Smith respectively.
Asher-Smith, running at home, blazed to a comfortable 11.11s win at the Müller Birmingham meet, with Jackson (11.12s) and countrywoman Daryll Neita (11.14s) claiming silver and bronze poduim places.
Blake, clocking 10.18s, also had to settle for second-best against Canadian Aaron Brown, who breezed to his first-ever Diamond League win in 10.13s.
