Jamaican-owned Paris Ruby Gourmet has marked its entry into the international market with the shipment of its first batch of fruitcakes to the United States.

The fruitcakes, a beloved Jamaican holiday treat, are now available on the shelves of Broward Meat and Fish Company in Margate, Florida, just in time for the holiday season. The export marks a significant milestone for the micro company that has spent the last two years towards this achievement.

Starting with a modest shipment of 170 fruitcakes, Paris Ruby Gourmet is focused on a measured approach, gradually increasing production as demand grows. To founder Zelecia Smith, this first batch represents more than just a business achievement; it is the culmination of years of dreams, aspirations, and hard work.

“I took a leap of faith to start this journey,” she shared adding, “It wasn’t easy, but the risk was worth it. I started by selling small cakes to friends and family while on vacation earlier this year. That’s when I met the manager of Broward Meat and Fish Company and shared my dream. He encouraged me and suggested ways to make it happen. And here we are—our first export is a reality!”

The cakes were shipped on Thursday, November 21, 2024. Smith’s decision to focus initially on the US market was strategic, as it allows the company to build its brand and reputation gradually.

“For now, I want to build my brand in the US market and ensure that I am ready for future growth. There’s no rush to enter too many markets at once and risk spreading myself too thin,” she explained, emphasising the importance of focusing on a key market.

The company’s journey from a micro, home-based operation to an international exporter has been both challenging and rewarding.

“This first step is a precious moment for me,” stated Smith.

“It proves that dreams and manifestations are real. The same product I started making at home is now reaching new heights—expanding from the island of Jamaica to the United States and beyond. It’s a testament to the potential of my product, and I’m so grateful to see it come to life,” she continued.

Paris Ruby Gourmet’s product line includes a variety of offerings such as cheesecakes, banana breads, and bread pudding. These products are available locally at Norman Manley and Donald Sangster International Airports, as well as at Grand Depot Limited in Montego Bay and S Foods in New Kingston.

Executive director of the Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association (JMEA) Kamesha Blake expressed immense pride to see a micro JMEA member company like Paris Ruby Gourmet venturing into the international market.

“Ms Smith’s dedication to quality and her unwavering commitment to growing her business are truly inspiring. This milestone is a testament to the potential of Jamaican MSMEs to succeed on the global stage. The JMEA is proud to support businesses like Paris Ruby Gourmet as they represent Jamaica internationally,” she stated.
