The Las Vegas Raiders are dealing with a heavy moment as they prepare for the NFL Draft, following the passing of former linebacker Rod Martin at the age of 72.
Martin carved out a lasting legacy with the Raiders, playing a key role in their Super Bowl XV and XVIII victories. His name is forever tied to one of the greatest defensive performances in championship history, delivering three interceptions in Super Bowl XV against the Philadelphia Eagles a record that still stands more than four decades later.
Selected in the 12th round of the 1977 draft out of University of Southern California, Martin exceeded expectations and built an impressive 12 season career. He earned two Pro Bowl selections and was named to the All Pro team twice in 1983 and then again in 1984.
Though official sack records were not tracked during much of his career, Martin still put together strong numbers, finishing with 56.5 sacks and 14 interceptions. His impact was also felt in Super Bowl XVIII, where he added a sack and recovered a fumble in another title winning performance.
