AC Milan is set to appoint Ruben Amorim as its new head coach, with the Portuguese manager expected to travel to Italy later this week to finalise a two-year deal.
The 41-year-old will replace Massimiliano Allegri, who was dismissed after a poor end to the season that saw Milan miss out on Champions League qualification. Although the agreement has not yet been signed, reports in Italy say Amorim is prepared to waive the remaining salary owed to him following his departure from Manchester United in January.
Amorim’s exit from Old Trafford followed a difficult 14-month spell, ending a stint that had initially raised expectations after his arrival from Sporting CP. Before moving to England, he had built a strong reputation in Portugal, ending a 19-year league drought with Sporting CP in 2020–21 and lifting another title in 2023–24.
He was appointed at United in November 2024 after the club pushed for an immediate change rather than waiting until the end of the season. His departure, along with his coaching staff, was reported to have cost United close to £15.9 million.
If the paperwork is completed as expected, his first match in charge of Milan will be a pre-season fixture against Celtic on July 25th. The club’s summer schedule will then end with a meeting against Manchester United in Wroclaw on August 15th.
