The Sunshine Girls, Jamaica’s official netball team, are asking for the nation’s support in raising J$41 million to participate in the 2023 NetBall World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa.

Their campaign, ‘Small Change, Big Difference’, hopes to collect J$1,000 donations or $10 donations in US, British or Canadian currency, to meet their goal of collecting J$1 million monthly. So far, Beryllium Limited and Wray & Nephew White Rum have entered two- and three-year sponsorship arrangements with the girls worth J$5 million and J$14 million respectively.

Still, the netballers need additional assistance as there remains a long way to go to secure all the funds needed ahead of the Netball World Cup, which gets under way in July next year.

Whittaker, a native of Salt Spring in Montego Bay, was arrested earlier this year during a police traffic stop in Miami, where officers reportedly found a firearm inside the vehicle he was travelling in. According to US authorities, the weapon had been altered with a device commonly referred to in Jamaica as a “chip glock”, which enables rapid fire.
