The Ministry of Public Health in the Dominican Republic—a Caribbean country with a spiralling COVID-19 outbreak—ramped up a testing and vaccination initiative on Friday (November 27). Despite achieving eight weeks of stability, a new spike in novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases leaves the Caribbean in a precarious position heading into the usually busy Christmas period.

The gap between the region’s active and closed COVID-19 cases further shrank on Friday (November 27), with 22 of the 32 affected countries and territories reporting new cases within the last 24 hours.

As at 8:31 pm Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT), collated data from respective health departments across the region have indicated a combined total of 286,555 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Of that number, some 187,557 cases, or roughly 65.4  per cent, have officially been declared closed. There are currently 98,998 active cases regionally.

The encouraging figures were largely the result of patients across the Caribbean reporting a full recovery from the infectious disease (182,169 recoveries to date, barring insufficient data from Puerto Rico).

In the meantime, the total number of patients who succumbed to coronavirus-related complications has steadily climbed to 5,388.

At the time of publication, only two Caribbean territories have managed to bring their active caseload to zero, namely: the British Virgin Islands and Monserrat.
