Austrian ski jumper Daniel Tschofenig has been disqualified from the men’s large hill individual event after failing equipment checks due to oversized boots.

The 23-year-old had looked comfortable heading into the final after qualifying strongly, but his medal hopes disappeared when officials ruled his boots were four millimetres larger than allowed.

His first round score of 137.7 was wiped out, handing Slovakia’s Hektor Kapustik a place in the final instead.

With Tschofenig out, Slovenia’s Domen Prevc went on to take gold, Japan’s Ren Nikaido claimed silver, and Poland’s Kacper Tomasiak secured bronze.

The disqualification adds to a weekend of strict equipment rulings in ski jumping. On Sunday, American athlete Annika Belshaw was also disqualified from the women’s large hill event after her skis were measured to be more than one centimetre too long, despite qualifying for the final.
