The West Indies Under-19s made a winning start in their quest for ICC Cricket World Cup glory, dispatching Tanzania by five wickets in Namibia on Thursday morning, Jamaican time.

Winners back in 2016, the West Indies moved to two points following a convincing win against a Tanzania team making their debut at the World Cup.

The West Indies won the toss and asked Tanzania to bat, and quickly dismissed them for 122 runs in 34 overs despite a 53-run opening stand by Dylan Thakrar (26) and Darpan Jobanputra (19).

Vitel Lawes took 3-23, Micah McKenzie 2-15 and man-of-the-match Shaquan Belle 2-33. He also took a catch and effected a run out, which broke Tanzania’s batting backbone.

The West Indies replied and reached 124-5 in just 21 overs for what was an easy win. Opener Tanez Francis smashed 52 from 55 balls, which was the first 50 of the tournament.

In other games, India beat the United States of America by six wickets, while the game between Scotland and Zimbabwe was not played because of rain without a ball bowled.
