The Office of the Public Defender (OPD) has just concluded the Portland leg of its redress road tour, which forms a part of its national Rights In Action campaign and has committed to looking into complaints received concerning the proposed Port Antonio bypass project.
During the tour, several residents complained that they had not received adequate information regarding the finalised proposed route, which has caused major concern throughout adjoining communities, nor had they received compensation details or guidance regarding possible relocation arrangements.
“The state does have an obligation to be transparent and to keep the citizens informed and be given a fair opportunity to respond to this decision that may affect their homes and livelihood,” Public Defender Carolyn Reid-Cameron stated.
The investigation will examine the processes being undertaken by the relevant public authorities, including the adequacy of notice and engagement with residents, land acquisition and valuation processes, compensation arrangements and measures proposed to protect or relocate affected persons.
