The player assumes the role of insurance inspector for the East India Company and is tasked with investigating what happened to the missing crew of 51 men.

3. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter

For many young people, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter would very likely have been their first introduction to murder mysteries. In this 2014 game, set in 1973, the player is paranormal investigator Paul Prospero, who has received a fan letter from 12-year-old Ethan Carter, which inspires him to journey to Ethan’s hometown. You then learn that Ethan has gone missing and begin encountering unsettling paranormal phenomena, as well as evidence of recent violence in the tiny mining village.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter has been remade as recently as 2019 for the Nintendo Switch and still touted by many as one of the best murder-mystery games of all time.

Pentiment is a narrative adventure role-playing video game set in Bavaria in the 16th Century developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Xbox Game Studios released on November 15, 2022. The player, as the journeyman artist Andreas Maler, investigates the murder of a prominent person for which his friend has been accused. The story spans 25 years. The player is meant to accuse an individual based on either who they think did it or who most deserves punishment. Concurrent with the main murder plot are other crimes and conspiracies.

5. What Remains of Edith Finch

What Remains of Edith Finch is a first-person, adventure game developed by Giant Sparrow and published by Annapurna Interactive in April 2017. Reexploring the house, she uncovers her family’s mysterious past and learns about the series of deaths that eventually caused the complete collapse of her family structure.
