Gadail Irving rammed home a long-range effort as Mount Pleasant clipped Cavalier 1-0 in a rescheduled Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League at the Stadium East field on Wednesday
Irving scored in the 27th minute and tempered his celebration, being a former Cavalier player. It was a goal that deserved to be celebrated as he picked up a ball from 35m and let fly that whistled past Suriname goalkeeper Demelcio Fer in the Cavalier’s goal.
Mount Pleasant, which still have three games in hand, climbed into third spot on 36 points, the same as Portmore United but with a better goal difference. Mount Pleasant have played 18 games and are nine points behind leaders Montego Bay United on 45 points from 21 games.
It was a clash of the last two Caribbean Club champions, with the reigning champion prevailing in a close encounter.
Cavalier, with their fourth straight loss and their 10th overall from 20 games, stayed in eighth spot on 26 points.
It was a major setback for a Cavalier team trying to stay in touch with a top-six playoff spot. However, they are just two points adrift of sixth-placed Tivoli Gardens on 28 points, in a closely-knit mid-table.
The league continues on Thursday with another rescheduled game as Dunbeholden FC hosts Spanish Town Police FC. Dunbeholden are ninth on 25 points and looking to jump into the top six, while Spanish Town Police are at the bottom in 14th spot on nine points and are heavy favourites to be relegated.
