The iconic Scary Movie franchise is making its long-awaited comeback!
Announced at CinemaCon, this reboot is the first collaboration among the franchise’s original creators in 18 years, and fans are excited as the film is guaranteed to deliver the nostalgic mix of laughs and thrills that made the series a cult classic and a comedy slasher staple.
“WE’RE BACK!!!” an excited Marlon Wayans posted on his social media. “After nearly 20 years, the Wayans brothers are finally going to give the fans what they’ve been asking for… a return to the SCARY MOVIE franchise! We’re looking forward to having fun on the big screen again.”
With a new original screenplay crafted by the Wayans brothers and Rick Alvarez, fans can expect a contemporary yet familiar take on the beloved series.
“I’m so excited!!!” one commenter wrote. “I had my hardest snorting laughing fit in Scary Movie 1, I almost hyperventilated. I can’t wait to do that again!
A Legendary Reunion
The Scary Movie franchise, originally developed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, Marlon Wayans, and Shawn Wayans, revolutionized the genre by parodying horror classics like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. The first film, released in 2000, also became one of the highest-grossing R-rated horror movies of all time setting a record with a staggering US 42.5 million opening weekend—making it a cultural, cinematic marvel.
Addressing the exciting reboot, Miramax’s Jonathan Glickman said, “We are thrilled to bring Scary Movie back with the Wayans brothers, the brilliant creators behind the beloved franchise.”
All four Scary Movie films currently have failing scores on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics universally panning the franchise. The audience scores typically reflect this sentiment. However, each film has grossed more than its production budget, demonstrating that fans always enjoy a good scary movie spoof!
The Wayans brothers can’t wait
In a joint statement, Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Wayans reflected on their journey: “We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the new Scary Movie and work with each other again. This franchise means so much to us; we remember the laughter that filled theatres. We can’t wait to bring that joy back!”
Their shared love for the franchise highlights their boosted energy behind this reboot.
“This seriously made my year!!!! So many dreadful movies out these days Can’t wait Hope you are able to get Anna and Regina!” one fan wrote.
