What Week 15 means for the NFL playoff picture

This time last week, the NFL only had one guaranteed playoff team but after a week of upsets and tight matchups, the playoff picture has got larger with the addition of more pieces.

Four more teams have been eliminated from playoff contention and join the already eliminated New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers. These teams will now play their remaining schedule to build for next year, or to play spoiler to the teams left.

Added to the pile of non-playoff teams: Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals, and Washington Commanders.

Three teams have joined the San Francisco 49ers in the playoffs, with the NFC having fewer spots to fight for with three teams already in the postseason.

Defending NFC champions the Philadelphia Eagles, as well as their division rival Dallas Cowboys have both clinched playoff berths. In the AFC, the teams are much closer across the conference and only one team is sure to be in the postseason, and that is the Baltimore Ravens, who clinched their place with the win in Saturday Primetime.

With only one place clinched in the AFC, that playoff push has more teams jostling for position and these last three weeks will be organised chaos. The battle for the top of the conference will be between the Ravens and the Miami Dolphins and the two set to play in Week 17.

The Ravens of course will look to survive a strong test against the 49ers, who are battling to remain atop the NFC. Both teams have a sterling 11-3 record and will be motivated to maintain their positions.

With the Denver Broncos losing on Saturday and the defending champions, the Kansas City Chiefs dispatching the eliminated Patriots, the Champs have more breathing room atop their division. They face two divisional in the next three games and can gain even more separation. There is still an outside chance they could top the AFC, but that would require fortuitous losses from the top two teams.

The NFC has fewer places up for grabs, with three teams already through to the postseason. The most shocking development in the conference was the Eagles losing in Monday Night Football against the Seattle Seahawks, who were in a must-win situation if the latter is to see the post-season.

The Seahawks were without their starting quarterback Geno Smith, who has been sidelined with a groin injury. Seattle head coach Pete Carroll had never lost to the Eagles in his tenure at the helm and would not lose his streak.

Incredible play from their defensive line meant that they were never too far out of it and with a little under a minute to go, Drew Lock threw an incredible pass into the end zone, which was brilliantly caught by Jaxon Smith- Njigba. The Seahawks were leading with one last chance for a quick move down the field by the Eagles, to give their incredible kicker Jake Elliot a chance to tie the game for Overtime.

Sensing the urgency of the moment, Jalen Hurts threw a Hail Mary into the end zone and Julian Love made an almost impossible grab for his second interception of the night to seal victory.

This result meant that the Eagles fell to second in their division and are looking at a wild card spot, instead of a top-four finish at the top of their division. They do still have the easiest schedule the rest of the way and could easily finish atop the conference and earn a bye for week one of the playoffs.

With the teams on the bubble playing better football, there could be some shake-up for the last four spots in the NFC and with only one spot taken in the AFC, the mad dash to the end will be even more frenetic in that conference.
