Portugal beat Croatia to reach the World Cup last 16, sealing a 2-1 victory. Cristiano Ronaldo had earlier put Portugal ahead from the penalty spot, scoring his first World Cup knockout goal after a VAR review spotted a foul at a corner.

Croatia thought they had snatched it deep into stoppage time when Joško Gvardiol bundled the ball in, but VAR ruled the goal out for offside after a tight buildup involving Igor Matanović and Mario Pašalić.

The match swung back and forth after Ivan Perišić had given Croatia the lead early in the second half, while both sides had goals ruled out and chances cleared off the line in a frantic spell.

Just when extra time looked certain, Rafael Leão whipped in a perfect cross and Ramos rose above the defence to head home in the 94th minute, sending Portugal through to a last 16 clash on Monday, July 6th with Spain in Dallas.
