Come December 19, triple Olympic gold medalist Elaine Thompson-Herah will know whether she would have won a third major award for the month, after the votes are tallied for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year’s World Sports Star.
Thompson-Herah, who won gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, is among the six nominees for the coveted BBC award. She won the 100m in a new Olympic record of 10.61 seconds, the 200m in a national record of 21.53s, the second-fastest time in history.
In doing so, she became the only woman to ever successfully defend both titles at the Olympics.
The 4x100m team ran a national record of 41.02s, the third-fastest time in history.
Following the Olympics, the 29-year-old Jamaican ran times of 10.54s, 10.64s and 10.65s on her way to winning the Diamond League title.
The 10.54s that she ran to win the 100m at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League meet in Eugene, Oregon on August 21, is the second-fastest time ever run by a woman.
She is the only black entrant up against a stacked field of world-class athletes that includes tennis star Novac Djokovic, who won three Grand Slam titles – the Australian and French Open as well as Wimbledon to join Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on 20 Grand Slam titles, the most in history.
Also nominated for the award are: Tom Brady, the legendary Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback, who won a record seventh Super Bowl title in February; Rachael Blackmore, who became the first female jockey to win the Grand National back in April; and Max Verstappen, who has won nine Formula One races this year and is locked in an epic clash with Lewis Hamilton for the 2021 crown.
Mexico’s Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, who has won titles in four weight classes, is also among the nominees. Alvarez became the first undisputed super-middleweight champion in boxing history with an 11th round finish against Caleb Plant last month.

So far this month, Thompson-Herah, the fastest woman alive, has been voted the World Athletics Female Athlete of the Year and the AW International Female Athlete of the year on December 1 and 3 respectively.
Last month she was named the NACAC Female Athlete of the Year.
Voting is open for the award on the BBC’s website and closes on December 14th with the winner being unveiled at the BBC Sports Personality of The Year Ceremony on December 19th.
